Our vase is a copy of the famous red figure amphora (450B.C) known as «Oedipus and the Sphinx of Thebes», attributed to the Achilles Painter, which is exhibited in the museum of fine arts in Boston. Side A: Oedipus ponders the riddle of the Sphinx. The hero wears a traveler’s cloak and petasos cap, and holds a spear in his hand. The Sphinx has the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. She crouches on a low plinth.Side B: Youth in himation, stands facing left.
