Beyond his ten World Cup goals, Cubillas led Peru to victory in the Copa América of 1975, where he was named the tournament’s best player, and he famously beat Pelé to the South American Footballer of the Year award in 1972. Remarkably, throughout a professional career spanning 21 years, he was never once sent off, embodying the spirit of a true gentleman of the game.
